SUSTAINABLE ACTION

DESIGN FOR SOCIAL CHANGE

WHY?

As a designer, I am passionate about the ideology of design for good. I love the idea of creating something larger than myself with impact. Advocating for social change through design bridges my two passions of design and sustainable initiatives. Designing for sustainable initiatives gives me the accessibility to continue being an active environmentalist while being a designer.

As a human, I am passionate about a human-centered approach. In my specific case, I like to emphasize global and local issues relating to waste disposal, ethically & sustainably sourcing, single-use plastics, and how there is no Planet B.

ZERO WASTE OXFORD

Zero Waste Oxford is a sustainability-focused student organization dedicated to bringing awareness to the amount of waste and footprint the average person produces. We promote the ideology of “zero waste” and educate Miami’s student body and the greater Oxford community about accessible changes that individuals can make to reduce waste.

I have been an active member of ZWO from 2021-2024. I started as a general member, moved up as Social Media and Marketing Manager, and am graduating as Vice President as well as SM&M Manager. As SM&M Manager, I create promotional content including flyers, digital & print (when necessary) signage, and …. As VP I restructured our exec team collaboration through Basecamp, a project management software, which has helped us tremendously. I ensure our small 4-person exec team, including myself, is on the right track to success.

ZWO’s impact on the community is expansive as we run trash pick-ups every Saturday in the local community and coordinate a student-run pop-up thrift shop twice a semester in Armstrong Student Center, Miami University. Our trash pick-ups continue to expand as we initiated collecting specialty recycling along with trash and regular recyclables. We branched out from student, staff, and faculty donations to coordinating with Uptown Cheapskate to collect their surplus donations. For the clothes that haven’t been sold at the end of term, we donate to women and youth shelters in the areas. Also, we are affiliated with Moon Co-Op, a co-op grocery, where we purchase snacks from their bulk section for general body meeting events and other miscellaneous items to promote sustainable eating, Fair Trade, small independent producers, and businesses.

Living sustainably and working directly within my small community has left an impact on my lifestyle and personal passions. Designing for good through sustainable action allows me to create with the hope of impacting others as I have been from my community

Below are some examples of my time with ZWO and my local community over the past few years :)
